Tree and Shrub Resources for Stapleton Colorado

As we are growing into our new home, we’re realizing just how much of a difference a yard with trees and shrubs makes. We’re also noticing how terrible our yard looks when a tiny shrub dies or the leaves on our trees start withering.

So, we did some research and found a number of resources that may be helpful to the rest of us living here in Stapleton. From cheap places to get trees, to tips and tricks on how to maintain your plants. Feel free to add any resources we missed in the comments section below.

Cheap Places to buy Trees & Shrubs
Arbor Day Foundation
Signup as a member for $10 and you get 10 free trees. And yes, the shipping is free! They’ll send them to you at the appropriate time of year to plant (usually the fall).

FreeTreesAndPlants.com
While technically “free”, the shipping is a bit more than the Arbor Day Foundation. But you get the comfort of knowing you saved a plant for the small cost of shipping. Even better, FreeTreesAndPlants.com employs workers with disabilities who do most of the stocking and shipping…a very cool company!

Local Tree Farms & Nurseries
The Tree Farm Longmont
If you haven’t heard their commercials on the radio, you will. They’re one of Colorado’s largest tree farms and also one of the better deals.

James Nursery Company
They’re been a local nursery for over 100 years and are just on the other side of Hwy 76 at the corner of York and 78th ave.

Info on How to Care for your Plants
By far the best resource we’ve ever found for plant and yard care is Yardener.com. If you have any questions about your lawn, trees, shrubs, etc., chances are they have an article detailing the problem and teaching you how to fix it.

Denver Master Gardner Site
As a graduate of CU, I almost couln’t link to a CSU site just on principal. But this has such great info it just can’t be left off the list.

Pruning Your Shrubs
Pruning your shrubs at the end of the season is a great way to encourage new growth in the Spring. But there are a few tricks you’ll want to keep in mind. First, don’t cut too far down the shrub, you want to “trim” the tree...not cut it in half. When you do cut, make a clean cut at a 45 degree angle.
